Strongman events for the curious: from the log to the stones

New to strongman and lost in the jargon? The sport can look like chaos from the outside, a series of strange objects lifted in strange ways. But underneath it there is a clear logic, and most events trace back to a handful of basic strength qualities a barbell athlete already trains.

The log press is overhead strength with a thick, awkward implement held against the body. If you can press a barbell, you can learn the log. The clean into the rack position is the part that takes practice, not the press itself. It rewards the same shoulders and triceps you already build.

The deadlift events, the axle and the car deadlift among them, are your barbell pull expressed through grip and stamina. Often it is reps for time rather than a single max, so conditioning and a brutal grip decide the outcome more than your one-rep number.

Then the carries and the stones. The yoke, the farmer is walk, and the atlas stones train the body to brace and move under load. These are the events that humble strong barbell lifters, because they demand a trunk and a back that can hold position while the legs do the work. A barbell athlete should start with the log and the farmer is walk: the carryover is immediate, and the learning curve is kind.
